Man Shouting “Refugees Are Terrorists” Arrested Trying to Enter Parliament
UPDATE — RCMP have released Minister of Employment Pierre Poilievre from custody and have issued an apology to the 36-year-old MP after mistaking him for a possibly mentally-disturbed person attempting to enter the “MPs Only” entrance.
OTTAWA — RCMP and CSIS anti-terrorist agents tasered and arrested a “swarthy man shouting anti-refugee slogans” early this morning near a private entrance to Parliament’s Centre Block.
“Security forces have detained a man of unknown nationality in response to 911 calls that a person shouting ‘Refugees are terrorists and filthy freeloaders’ was spotted approaching Parliament,” a grim faced RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson told reporters called to an emergency media briefing earlier today.
“The man was uncooperative and officers were concerned he was a threat to public security and possibly to himself.”
“He was forcibly detained and transported to the Ottawa Hospital for observation.”
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office issued a brief statement thanking the RCMP and CSIS, and reassuring Canadians that “terrorists are everywhere”.
“This is proof that I am the only leader who can keep you and your loved ones safe from those who would harm us in our sleep,” said Harper in the media release.
