Mayor Denies Tweeting Regina Renamed ‘Vagina’ During Wild Grey Cup Celebrations
REGINA — In the crazy hours that followed the Roughriders 45-23 Grey Cup victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, social media exploded with whoops and yee-haws from Saskatchewan fans across the country including one tweet that went viral.
The one that came from Regina Mayor Michael Fougere.
That changed Regina’s name to Vagina.
“Luv this city. Hear ye Hear ye. Rhythms-With jokes’ve gone on for years. Soooo Rider Nation, I hereby proclaim Regina now named Vagina,” read the message from @mayorfougere.
The message instantly whipped around social media temporarily shutting down the City of Regina’s web server and piling up more than 12,000 messages on the City’s Facebook page:
“LMFAO. Mayor Fou you rule. RIDERS!”
“Regina renamed after Burris!”
“City site hacked. No way I’m gonna be a Vaginan.”
Mayor Fougere told CTV early this morning that the City of Regina has not undergone a name change and that the tweet did not come from him.
“Someone got caught up in the excitement and got twitter happy,” said Fougere. “That Regina Vagina chestnut just never seems to go away.”
When asked by the Leader-Post as he was leaving City Hall if he or Chief of Police Troy Hagen had any suspects in mind as to who was behind the tweet, Fougere said a few people came to mind but it could have been anybody from a Tiger-Cats fan to Coach Kent Austin.
Chief Hagen said that while the word vagina is not a name he would choose for a city, no further investigation is planned.
“Blame it on Nigel Wright.”
